How to apply for Master’s Programs

 

Application Procedure for Master’s Programs

Students must apply using our online application system. Prospective applicants should read the section below, which outlines exactly which documents will be required before filling out the online application.

 

Documents to be Uploaded with online application

(1)  Curriculum Vitae

(2)  Academic Degrees and Official Transcripts.  Students will have to upload their undergraduate degree (scan of actual degree diploma) and a copy of their official transcript. Students should also upload a copy of the degree and transcripts of any additional degrees earned.
Students who have not yet graduated at the time of application, but will have graduated before the start of the program for which they are applying, may submit their transcript to date. If they are accepted into the program, then they will be required to provide to The Cyprus Institute Graduate School their official final transcript and copy of their degree as soon as they are issued. Degrees must be from accredited institutions/programs. 
    
(3)  English Language Certificates. If your first language is not English, you must provide recent evidence that your spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the program to which you are applying. Proof of English language proficiency may be demonstrated by submitting one of the following certificates (or equivalent as deemed by the Admissions Committee).  

  IELTS Academic version: at least 6.5 (taken within the past 2 years
  TOEFL Internet-based Test: at least 79 (taken within the past 2 years)
  GCSE/IGCSE: Grade C or above (preferably with speaking)
IELTS or TOEFL is preferred. 

The English Language proficiency test requirement may be waived if you have/will graduate from a higher education institution in which English is the medium of instruction and communication or if you have a minimum of eighteen months of work experience in a country that CyI considers to be “majority English speaking” no more than two years prior to the proposed date of registration.

(4) Other Certificates. Applicants may upload up to 4 additional certificates that they feel are relevant in the Other Certificates section of the application (e.g. score reports of standardized tests such as the GRE, awards, prizes, certificates etc.)

(5) Statement of Intent. Your statement of intent should be 500-1000 words. The statement should convince the faculty on the selection committee that you have solid achievements that demonstrate potential for success in graduate study. Ideally, it should address the following:
(1) Introduction: Introduce yourself, your interests and your motivations. This section should be brief and to the point (not an autobiography).

(2) Summarize your undergraduate, and if applicable graduate career.

      (a) Research conducted. Mention with whom, title of project, what you responsibilities were, and the outcome. Write technically, since professors will read your statement 
      (b) Work experience, especially responsibilities related to your proposed field of graduate study to which you are applying
(3) Discuss relevance of your recent and current activities: If you graduated prior to applying to graduate school, write about what you have been doing and what you learned during this time. Explain how this experience helped you to focus on what you want to do during your graduate studies
(4) Elaborate on your academic interests: Indicate what you want to study in graduate school in enough detail to convince the faculty reviewing the application that you understand the scope of research in their discipline, and are engaged in current research themes:
      (a) Indicate your area of interests. You may pose a question, define a problem, or specify a theme that you would like to address, and questions that arise from current research in the area. This should be addressed clearly and thoroughly.
      (b) Look on the web at professors and their research. Look specifically for professors whose research interests are aligned with yours and indicate it.
      (c) End the statement in a positive manner, demonstrating your excitement and readiness for the challenges ahead.

(6)  References. Applicants will be asked to provide the names of at least two references (professors, supervisors, employers, or others able to comment on your academic performance and suitability for graduate studies. Recommendations should specifically address your ability to succeed in your proposed academic program and discuss any experience that may have prepared you to succeed in the program. Your recommenders will be required to fill out an online recommendation form which will be automatically requested by entering their contact details on the application form. You will need to enter their full name, title, institution and email address.


How to apply for PhD Programs

The Cyprus Institute offers the opportunity to apply for a PhD program through our online Application System.

Documents to be Submitted with the online application

(1)  Curriculum Vitae 

(2)  Academic Degree Certificates and Transcripts. An official copy of the Master’s degree and official transcript(s) of past academic work and studies are required. The transcript(s) should include a detailed list of the courses/seminars taken along with the grades received in each course and a GPA. The Institute accepts Master’s degrees obtained from a recognized accredited institution. If an applicant has not completed a Master’s degree yet, a transcript(s) that list coursework and grades thus far, and expected date of completion of the Master’s degree, should be provided.

(4)  GRE Score Report for General GRE test. This can be submitted if available.

(5)  Personal Statement. Applicants should submit (upload on the online application form) a personal statement (< 1500 words), including a research plan outlining topics of interest and indicating how this aligns with research and faculty at the CyI. Note: if admitted, the candidate is NOT held to the submitted research plan – this plan is a draft and is to indicate the candidate’s research interests and abilities – the final PhD project will be discussed and agreed with the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee after admission to the Cyprus Institute.

The personal statement should describe the applicant’s background and recent/current academic work and future research plans in relation to the Cyprus Institute’s Research activities and the doctoral program to which the student is applying. If possible, it should identify relevant Cyprus Institute faculty. The statement should point to the educational, research and personal experiences that shaped the student’s interest in the proposed field of study. It should outline the research area that the applicant is interested in, and the intended research topics to be investigated at the Cyprus Institute. It should concisely mention examples of the applicant’s work that illustrate the potential to meet the expectations of the graduate program of study at the Cyprus Institute. The statement must be written in English.

(6)  Example of Written Work. This is an example of (or a part of) current or previous work by the applicant that demonstrates the candidate’s interests and abilities for their proposed studies at the Cyprus Institute. This piece of writing may comprise any of the following: an essay (or excerpt) from undergraduate/graduate work, a publication, a conference presentation, a part of Undergraduate or Master’s Thesis, or a text written specially for the purpose of this application. This document must be in English and not exceed circa 3000 words.

(7)  References. Applicants are requested to provide contact details of at least two faculty members or other professionals who are well acquainted with the applicant’s academic, research and professional work and are willing to provide a references.
